Nadi Astrology in Vedas

Nadi Astrology is an ancient art of prediction, which uses the method of predicting a person's life with the help of his/her thumb impression. In ancient times sages foresaw future of all humans and inscribed them on palm leaves. Many believe that these palm leaves found in Vaitheeswaran temple in Tamil Nadu. These predictions were written by saint called Agathiyar. This system of astrology was mainly and widely followed in Tamil Nadu, though now is being practiced all over India.

The history of Nadi astrology was developed thousands of years ago by sages when recording the destiny of individual souls for all time. They did this by cognizing subtle mechanics of creation on finest levels of their own awareness. These cognitions were recorded in form of dialogue between Lord Shiva and consort Parvati. Through refinement of awareness these enlightened sages would directly experience the important interacting dynamics of pure consciousness, which is the absolute field of an existing life form. In this eternal conversation God whispers to himself about a native man, the details of life and the future.

This form of astrology is practiced in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and other adjacent areas in South India. This is an ancient method of recording data. Over the ages, people have come to believe that a thousand years ago great Indian sages granted a boon, to look into every human being's past, present and future lives. They had to power to look into the lives of people who were not only dead, but present and future born as well! These were then recorded onto palm leaves in Tamil script. These can be deciphered or read by Nadi astrologers or experts who studied this branch of astrology. Nadi means in search of. Existence of Nadi astrology indicates every human being is in search of past and future. According to legends these scriptures on palm leaves are scattered across India.

Nadi astrology is used for many predictions related to human life, like professional, marriage, health or career. The two main Nadi types for different aspects of human life are Gaanda nadi and Jeeva Nadi. Gaanda nadi is concerned of person's past, future and present. This is about predicting all material things like career, health, wealth and marriage. Jeeva Nadi on the other hand is concerned about things happening at present. This is about Gnana and Nakshatra. Nadi astrology in marriage compatibility concerns is used by matching nakshatra of boy and girl. In North India this Nakshatra based match is called Ashtakuta Guna Milap or 36 point match. Following eight (Ashta in Sanskrit) agreements are generally observed;
  • Varna (for Work compatibility, points allotted - 1)
  • Vashya (for Dominance compatibility, points allotted - 2)
  • Tara (for Destiny compatibility, points allotted - 3)
  • Yoni (for Mentality compatibility, points allotted - 4)
  • Graha Maitri (for General compatibility, points allotted - 5)
  • Gana (for Guna-level compatibility, points allotted - 6)
  • Bhakoota (for Love compatibility, points allotted - 7)
  • Nadi (for Health compatibility, points allotted - 8)
The above marriage compatibility is based on the Nakshatra occupied by Moon in proposed husband's and wife's chart. This is a deep look at the compatibility between two people's psychological, spiritual, physical and sub-conscious level. Nadi has been given the most points and hence regarded as the most important factor by astrologers. The Nadi disagreement between two people in marriage compatibility is called Nadi Dosha and generally regarded as the strict ‘no’ for the marriage.

There are three different Nadis which represent the Prakriti of native according to their body constitution. These are Adi (start), Madhya (middle) and Antya (end). As per Ayurveda there are three different Prakritis which are Kaph, Vaat and Pita. The Nadis Adi, Madhya and Antya Nadi are equivalent to these Prakritis only. Nadi Dosha becomes true if the proposed husband and wife are having the same Nadi type. If Nadis of proposed husband and wife are different it is only then marriage is recommended so they may have physically stronger children.

Nadi Astrology is one of the oldest forms of astrology originating in India and in the recent past, it has attained a lot of popularity. However, due to its popularity and lack of clarity among people about its nature, a lot of fraudulent knowledge and frauds pretending to be experts are doing the rounds.

Roots of Indian astrology

Vedic astrology of our times has left us with a deep insight of dealing with the karma of lives. It is including meditation with practice, which neutralizes effects of a bad astrology. Vedic astrology is ancient science which helps us realize our true self and the divinity of soul. It provides individuals with a clarification of Karma. Vedic astrology lessens the uncertainty and anxiety of the individual's future in a remarkable manner. While it helps us navigate confidently within the confusing waves of Karma, one is aware of destiny and inner timeless self as well.

Vedic astrology uses sidereal positions of planets against the backdrop of relatively fixed stars as most astronomers also achieve. This astrology science calculates stars in night sky in Jyotisha, positions of planets and other significant aspects which are calculated with respect to a person's or event's birth data. The Vedic astrology is studied to derive almost 100 charts and tables, information based on rules of interpretation created by ancient sages and handed down to us in form of ancient scriptures and texts.

Vedic system of astrology easily makes cusp as beginning of house while western astrology makes cusp as the middle of house. This leads to forming of planetary positions in a Vedic chart which moves forward to the next house which is as relative to western chart astrology. Vedic astrology uses additional 27 fold divisions of the zodiac called nakshatra or constellations. In this regard the overall traits of personality are readable through birth star or Nakshatra of Moon than from the sun sign. Thus these positions of nakshatra of planets are understood to be read alongside a birth chart also. This is a most important part of Vedic astrology, much more than astrology signs.

Five main uses of astrology have been defined by Vedas as Kama (family and relationship), artha (finances), dharma (career and vocation), moksha (spiritual guidance) and arogya (physical and mental health). As our body is made of atoms so is solar system, when the laws governing movement of planets around Sun and electrons around nucleus of atom are same.

Vedic astrology manifests with three qualities or gunas, i.e., Satva (quality of goodness), Raja (satva and tamas or dark qualities). The Planets are supposed to provide predominantly Satva Guna, shedding cool rays, which are like sacred water.  Some planets shed mixed rays (raja guna) and others poisonous rays (tamo guna) and still others with rays of no effect. The auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the planets have been classified on the basis of these three types of rays.

Even the concept of muhurta in Vedic astrology is an indication of all three gunas from the planets with effects on humans. Positions of these planets vary because of their movement in orbits. There are specific moments, during which the atmosphere of the planets are favorable and they shed rays, which are helpful to us, and again there are some specific moments when these planets act harmfully. So there is great importance attached to the concept of Muhurta.

The planets and stars not only have effect on human beings but also on non-living things. The effects which the Moon and Sun have on the oceans cause high tides and low tides. Even modern science accepts that the 71% of the surface of the earth is covered with water and only 29% is land. Even our bodies and those of all the living beings constitute the same proportion i.e. 71% in water. So, if the Moon can cause tides on a non-living like the ocean, it can definitely affect a man who is a living being with a conscious mind.

Vedic astrology uses a system of planetary periods called dasha. Most important is a vimshottari dasha which is a 120 year old long cycle of planetary positions based on birth nakshatra. With the help of this dasha, a Vedic astrologer can foretell future events accurately. However western astrology does not have this dasha system and predictive capabilities as Vedic astrology have.
